I've paid close attention to what changes lead to what apparent "improvement" in the spring finds. I've always noted that wet ground enhances the size of iron and or it's halos, if you prefer. Of course as already mentioned, wet ground aids detection of the desirable targets providing they aren't colocated with iron. The springs that follow a good, deep, hard ground freeze, the iron is abnormally relatively "small" a lot of times given the same amount of ground moisture, etc. Those springs always seem to yield the best finds from old hard hit sites that produce. I believe the hard freeze temporarily "fractures" the iron's minerals that leach around it which results in the lesser masking effect albeit temporarily.
